Lancement officiel du projet européen ECHOES (European Cloud for Heritage OpEn Science)

Le projet européen ECHOES (European Cloud for Heritage OpEn Science) a été officiellement lancé. Le 3 juin 2024, les partenaires se sont réunis à la Maison des Sciences de l’Homme Val de Loire pour discuter des premières étapes de la construction d’un écosystème numérique innovant pour le patrimoine culturel européen qui favorisera les relations avec les communautés et qui encouragera l’intégration des données.

ECHOES (European Cloud for Heritage OpEn Science) est coordonné par le Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), en coopération avec le Conseil national de la recherche scientifique (CNR) italien et la Fondation des science du patrimoine (FSP). Cette initiative implique un consortium de 51 partenaires, un réseau essentiel pour impliquer un large éventail d’acteurs du patrimoine culturel matériel et immatériel.

ECHOES lauréat de l’appel à projets pour la création d’un cloud collaboratif européen pour le patrimoine culturel

En juin 2022, la Commission européenne a annoncé sa volonté d’accompagner la création d’un cloud collaboratif pour le patrimoine culturel, afin de mieux mettre en relation les différentes institutions patrimoines et les professionnels du secteur.

Elle entend ici aider à mieux comprendre, documenter, préserver et valoriser le patrimoine culturel matériel et immatériel à l’échelle européenne en fournissant un écosystème numérique permettant l’interconnexion et l’harmonisation des pratiques relatives aux objets numériques.

Financé dans le cadre d’Horizon Europe, une enveloppe de 110 millions d’euros a été réservé jusqu’en 2025 pour la création du Cloud ce qui représente le plus important financement jamais mobilisé en Europe pour une initiative sur le patrimoine culturel et plus largement en SHS. Deux appels à projets ont été lancés en 2023, et de nouveaux appels seront lancés en 2024 et en 2025.

C’est dans ce contexte que le projet European Cloud for Heritage OpEn Science (ECHOES), porté par le CNRS sous la coordination scientifique de Xavier Rodier, directeur de la MSH Val de Loire, est lauréat de l’appel Horizon Europe 2023 A European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (HORIZON-CL2-2023-HERITAGE-ECCCH-01-01) avec une dotation de 25 millions d’euros pour cinq années de travaux (2024 – 2029). Ce projet a pour objectif la création du Cloud collaboratif, plateforme européenne de référence pour les professionnels du patrimoine culturel matériel et immatériel.

Pour le projet ECHOES, le CNRS, avec le CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Italie) et la FSP (Fondation des Sciences du Patrimoine), a constitué un consortium de 51 partenaires européens, organismes de recherche, réseaux représentatifs des communautés du patrimoine culturel (musées, bibliothèques, archives, restauration, etc.), universités ou encore acteurs privés du domaine. Projet pilote, ECHOES a pour ambition de créer l’infrastructure et l’entité légale du cloud avec et pour les communautés du patrimoine culturel. ECHOES favorise ainsi la co-construction de la connaissance en adoptant une approche holistique de la transformation numérique. ECHOES favorisera l’émergence de Digital Commons à travers cet environnement numérique afin d’enrichir et d’analyser collectivement des objets, des faits ou des phénomènes du patrimoine culturel. Les acteurs – humains ou intelligence artificielle (IA) – pourront y développer leurs propres interprétations et ainsi contribuer à la construction de la connaissance. Il permet aussi l’intégration des autres projets européens et nationaux au sein du Cloud, grâce à une approche transparente de la gouvernance et l’application des principes de la science ouverte.

This initiative also includes a consortium of 51 european partners, an essential network to involve a wide range of stakholders of tangible and intangible Cultural Heritage.

The ECHOES consortium was selected to oversee the creation of a Collaborative European Cloud for Cultural Heritage

In June 2022, the European Commission announced its commitment to supporting the creation of a collaborative cloud for cultural heritage. This initiative aims to strengthen connections between various heritage institutions and sector professionals, enhancing the understanding, documentation, preservation, and promotion of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage across Europe. The initiative will establish a digital ecosystem to interconnect and harmonise practices related to digital objects.

Funded under the Horizon Europe program, the Cloud for Cultural Heritage has been allocated a budget of €110 million until 2025, marking the largest investment ever made in Europe for a cultural heritage initiative and more broadly in the humanities and social sciences (HSS). Two calls for proposals were launched in 2023, with additional calls planned for 2024 and 2025.

The European Cloud for Heritage OpEn Science (ECHOES) project, led by CNRS under the scientific coordination of Xavier Rodier, Director of MSH Val de Loire, has won the Horizon Europe 2023 call “A European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage” (HORIZON-CL2-2023-HERITAGE-ECCCH-01-01). ECHOES has been awarded €25 million for five years of work (2024 – 2029). The project aims to create the collaborative cloud, a European reference platform for both tangible and intangible cultural heritage professionals.

For the ECHOES project, CNRS, together with CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Italy) and FSP (Fondation des Sciences du Patrimoine), has formed a consortium of 51 European partners. These partners include research organisations, networks representing cultural heritage communities (museums, libraries, archives, restoration, etc.), universities, and private sector entities. As a pilot project, ECHOES aspires to create the infrastructure and legal entity for the cloud in collaboration with and for the cultural heritage communities. ECHOES promotes a holistic approach to digital transformation, encouraging the co-construction of knowledge.

The ECHOES project will foster the emergence of Digital Commons through this digital environment, allowing collective enrichment and analysis of cultural heritage objects, facts, or phenomena. Actors—both human and artificial intelligence (AI)—will be able to develop their interpretations and thus contribute to the construction of knowledge. Thanks to a transparent governance approach and the application of open science principles, ECHOES will also integrate other European and national projects within the cloud.
